4 ways to reduce gout through nutrition

Gout is a common type of arthritis. When you have gout, high levels of uric acid in your blood forms crystals in your joints. As a result, joints may become swollen, red and very tender

The below 4 dietary strategies may help improve your pain and inflammation.

1. Reduce your alcohol intake because alcohol can greatly increase your uric acid levels. Limiting the amount of alcohol you drink, especially beer and spirits, may reduce your risk of gout. As always, speak with your doctor to ensure there is no interaction between alcohol and your medications.

2. Stay hydrated and drink between 8 and 10 glasses of water to dilute the uric acid levels in your body. Research suggests sugary drinks like fruit juices or soft drinks may increase your risk of gout.

3. Reduce your intake of high purine foods like red meat and organ meats (e.g. kidney, liver, seafood (mostly shellfish, scallops, mussels, sardines) and yeast found in vegemite and beer. These foods contain high level of purines, which form uric acid in the body.

4. Choose low fat dairy foods like skim milk and low fat yoghurt as these foods may lower uric acid levels in the body and prevent gout attacks.
